Introduction to Containers

Chris Taylor, Principal Consultant Jarrin Consultancy Ltd.

Containers have been around for a while now but are becoming increasingly popular and with Microsoft’s release of Windows Server 2016, Docker is now their effective container standard. In this demo heavy session, we will run through what containers are, how to get started with Docker and “spinning up” SQL Server environments with minimal fuss and how you can adapt these or indeed your own VM images to create your own bespoke SQL Server development and testing environments.

About Chris:
Chris (@SQLGeordie) is a Principal Consultant working at Jarrin Consultancy providing SQL Server and Microsoft Azure consultancy to clients worldwide in a variety of industries ranging from Financial to Healthcare. He has been working with SQL Server since 2001 and during that time has become extremely strong in all areas of SQL Server but specialises in Security, System Optimisation and SQL Server Internals.

Containers and CI

Chris Adkin, EMEA SQL Server solutions architect Pure Storage

Containers are ideally suited for continuous delivery scenarios, this session will cover how these can be used with Jenkins, the build engine which the likes of eBay and Netflix use. Jenkins provides a number of powerful features, such as continuous integration build pipeline as code, multi-branch build pipelines and the ability to implement an entire build pipeline using containers. In particularly this session will touch on how to leverage containers and Jenkins with SQL Server Data Tools

About Chris:
Chris has been a SQL Server professional for over fifteen years and has worked in roles varying from DBA to developer to architect and has spoken at the last four SQL Bits as well as multiple SQL Saturday events around Europe. Chris's overriding passion is take workloads, scale them, push the engine to its limits and find out where its edges are and what its doing under the covers, how it is utilising the CPU at a deep level and often using tools such as windows performance toolkit in order to dig right down to call stack level . Currently, Chris works for Pure Storage as its EMEA SQL Server solutions architect.
